FACT CHECK: The Viral Video of Mass Graves of Coronavirus In Italy Is From A Sci-Fi Thriller

A widely circulated video that is currently doing rounds on social media platforms is that of the massive number of dead bodies being dumped into Italy's graveyards where deaths due to coronavirus have been the highest in Europe. 


This viral video, shared mostly on Facebook and WhatsApp, a TV news anchor is giving a commentary on the situation. The netizens are claiming on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook that the video shows the present situation in Italy.


Facebook user 'Moinuddin Hasan Altaf' posted this viral video with the caption, "Dead bodies of corona victims in Italy!"


Fake Italy Mass Graves Viral Video


The Wealthskey fact check team investigated the claim about the mass graves in Italy viral video. However, it was found out that this viral video is a part of the scene from a miniseries called the 'Pandemic', which was released in 2007.


The anchor in the video can be heard saying, 


"Though unsubstantiated by state and city authorities, we now have information for a knowledgeable source that tells us the city's temporary morgues are filled beyond capacity. Mass graves have been dug for the incineration and burial of the dead. The current death toll due to the riptide virus is now in thousands."


From the context of the word "riptide virus," we found that this was used in the miniseries 'Pandemic'.


The riptide virus was believed to be a byproduct of the bird flu in the 'Pandemic'.


We relied on InVID - a video verification platform -- to break the viral video in keyframes, and by using reverse image search and thus came to the conclusion that the viral scene was indeed a part of the TV series 'Pandemic'.


The exact portion of the viral scene can be viewed between 1:01:54 and 1:02:22.

Pandemic is a 2007 American science-fiction thriller series where an epidemiologist and an FBI agent trying to stop a deadly virus outbreak that spreads from person to person in Los Angeles.


Italy is the worst-affected country with coronavirus cases and its death toll surging past 8,000.


Hence, the Wealthskey research has reached to a conclusion that this viral video is part of a TV series and not from Italy.
